COMMON CARP (Cyprinus carpio)
OTHER NAMES: European Carp
RANGE: Of Eurasian origin, the Carp has spread widely throughout the U.S. but in Florida is common only in the northern counties. A minor fishery exists in the Apalachicola watershed, and in some private or municipal ponds, where it was once stocked.
HABITAT: Shallow, grassy areas with soft bottom.
DESCRIPTION: Greenish above and whitish below. Often has an overall red or gold cast, with reddish tail. Has two barbels on each side of the small mouth.
SIZE: From a pound to 20 pounds. World record 75 pounds, 11 ounces; Florida record 40.56 pounds.
FOOD VALUE: Not highly regarded. Very bony.
GAME QUALITIES: A surprisingly strong fighter, but no challenge to the angler.
TACKLE AND BAITS: Rods must be scaled to the size being sought. Baits are usually doughballs, cheeseballs or some other "secret" concoction, but earthworms work pretty well.
